Our Story

I n early April 2009, we opened our first small retail shop in Bali. It was the beginning of a journey that has now grown into 34 locations across Bali, two distinctive brands, and a team of people who continue to move the business forward every day.

The story is not simply about how many stores we have today. It is about what we have learned along the way — through change, experimentation, challenges, new ideas, and the people who have helped shape the business.

We quickly learned that creating something beautiful was only one part of the challenge. Creating products with consistent quality, developing reliable processes, understanding customers, and building a business that could grow required continuous learning.

So we learned by doing. We tried. We made mistakes. We changed. We tried again. Over time, this became part of how we work.

From one shop to 34 locations
Our first shop taught us the fundamentals of retail: how customers shop, what they respond to, which ideas work, and which ones need to change. Even in the early days, we understood that growth would require more than opening more stores. It required people, systems, processes, and a willingness to keep improving.

As the business grew, so did our team and our capabilities. Different people joined at different stages, bringing new skills, ideas, perspectives, and energy. The journey has been shaped not by one person, but by many people contributing over time.

Today, in 2026, 17 years after opening our first shop, we have 34 locations across Bali. But we still try to think like a company with one shop: stay close to customers, keep learning, and always ask what we can do better.

Growing Through Change
Retail never stays the same. Customers change. Trends change. Markets change. Technology changes. Competition changes.

We have learned that growth depends on our ability to adapt. We continue to explore new products, materials, concepts, store experiences, systems, and ways of working. Some ideas work. Some do not. Both are part of the learning process.

This mindset led to the development of two distinctive brands. Kapal-Laut grew from our early focus on silver jewellery and our curiosity about materials, design, and craftsmanship. Blink was introduced in 2015 as a more playful, colourful, and trend-conscious brand within our growing retail business.

Today, Kapal-Laut and Blink have their own identities, while sharing the same entrepreneurial DNA: be curious, stay open, and keep moving.

People Make the Business
Behind every store, product, system, and customer experience are people. Our teams are the ones who bring the business to life every day — welcoming customers, maintaining standards, solving problems, creating experiences, and making things happen.

Over 17 years, many people have been part of our journey. Some joined when we had only a few stores. Others joined as the business grew. Some moved into new roles, developed new skills, or took on greater responsibility. Each person has added something to our story.

That is what we want to continue building: a company where people can learn, contribute, take ownership, and grow.

Still Learning. Still Building.
We do not expect anyone to have all the answers. Our own journey has shown us that progress comes from being willing to learn, ask questions, try new things, take responsibility, and improve.

We value people who are:

·         Curious enough to ask questions.
·         Open enough to learn and adapt.
·         Brave enough to try.
·         Responsible enough to make things happen.
·         Committed enough to keep improving.

The journey has never been perfectly planned — and that is part of what makes it exciting. There are still new ideas to explore, customers to serve, problems to solve, and opportunities to grow.

From one small shop to 34 locations. From one core product focus to two distinctive brands. From doing things ourselves to building teams, systems, and processes that allow the business to grow.

17 years in, we are still building. And we are still curious about what comes next.

Kapal-Laut & Blink

Still curious. Still building. Still looking ahead.
